This is the third year of the Talks with Teachers Summer Book Club, a time for us as teachers to share a love of reading, build on each other’s insights, and grow as a community.
Bell Hooks once said, “For most people, what is so painful about reading is that you read something and you don’t have anybody to share it with. In part what the book club opens up is that people can read a book and then have someone else to talk about it with. Then they see that a book can lead to the pleasure of conversation, that the solitary act of reading can actually be a part of the path to communion and community.”
Here’s how it works our community works:
- we read a novel in June
- a work of nonfiction in July
- a teaching book in August
The June novel is Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad, a work that won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. It was a #1 New York Times bestseller and has been hailed as a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave’s adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South.
We will discuss the book on our Facebook group throughout the month. To join us, just enter your email address below. I’ll send out updates periodically to the group.
